THE STORY: This medal commemorates the 125th anniversary of the building
of the longest covered bridge west of the Mississippi River. Built in 1863. the bridge crosses. the Tuolumne River in the
small town of Knights Ferry. Common in the eastern United States. covered bridges are rare in the west This one was built
to replace ferry's that were used to assist travelers and goods crossing the river often in route to or from the gold county.
Although no longer in use, it is still visited by many each year and can be seen from the new bridge built to replace it.
The design of this medal depicts the bridge as it looked then and as it still does. Again, very few medals have a western
covered bridge as their main feature.
